Pronunciation? Known as Visakhapatnam, shortened and anglicizes, Vizag or Vizagapatam or Waltair) is the deepest port city in Indian state of Andhrapradesh. It is located on the eastern coast of India, nestled among the hills of the Eastern Ghats and facing the Bay of Bengal, well connected with Air, Surface Transport. The city is about 650km northeast of Hyderabad. The city is the administrative headquarters of Visakhapatnam District. It is referred as “City of Destiny”.
The city is home to several state owned heavy industries, and has one of the Country’s largest port and oldest shipyard. It has the only natural harbor on the eastern coast of India. The charming hill on the seafront, sprawled over 100 acres of hill area, and rising 304 mts. Above sea level, presents a breath taking scenic view, especially towards Bheemili. Simhachalam or the "Lion Hill" is 16 km, from Visakhapatnam. It is Important Hindi pilgrim center, known as Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple. The main deity is always covered with sandal paste and the real shape of the deity can only be seen during Chandanayatra Festival (March-April). The shrine is also noted for its excellent architecture.
Kurusura and originally decommissioned submarine is located on the sand of the R.K.Beach is developed into a museum.This project is jointly taken up by the NSDRC and Eastern Naval Command. The estimated cost is around 2.55 crore and it is first of its kind in Asia and second in the world and is opened for public.
Rushikonda is a thickly covered hill located at a distance of 13Kms from Visakhapatnam-Bhimunipatnam beach road. The steep hill slopes upward from rushikonda beach which is one of the loveliest beaches. The most conspicuous land mark in vizag is Dolphin’s Nose a huge rock 357mts height promontory jutting out into the sea and very like the nose of mammal. It also shelters the harbor, from where manganese and iron are shipped out. The nation’s powerful beacon of the lighthouse directs ships 65kms away.
